Former Iowa Democratic Party Chair Endorses Obama

Barack Obama has picked up a big endorsement in the state in former State Party Chair Gordon Fischer.

From the Des Moines Register...

Fischer said he endorses Obama because he is a change agent, has the best policies and is the more likely to win than other Democrats. He noted a recent poll that showed Obama was the highest ranking Democrat among Republican voters.
Fischer's endorsement might not bring a bunch of supporters along, but it is something Obama can add to keep up with Clinton (Vilsack) and Biden's (Iowa House leaders McCarthy, Whitaker, Heddens, and Reasnor) big endorsements in the state.

I am very surprised by this. I really thought he'd go with Clinton.

Six months ago I would have agreed that Obama was much more electable than Hillary. Now I'm not so sure, though. He is not running as good a campaign as I expected from him, and he has not yet faced the full fury of the right-wing hate machine. He didn't go through a long, tough campaign in IL either (his GOP opponent in the Senate race was a joke).

Hillary has run a solid campaign, making almost no mistakes, while Obama has made what I consider plenty of mistakes.

The great thing about John Edwards is that I know he can handle a long, tough campaign, because he's been through it in 2004. Also, he's already had everything thrown at him this year--so little attention in the national media, and so much of that negative. Nonetheless, he is doing better in head-to-head matchups with Republicans than Hillary.

Bottom line is that I am no longer so sure that Obama is more electable than Hillary, but I am still confident that Edwards is.

First one to filibuster the next funding bill gets my vote.

Edwards voted against the only Iraq war supplemental he saw--the $87 billion. He was ahead of elite and popular opinion on that.

So did John Kerry, which one did it first?

desmoinesdem,

I don't think Edwards ever voted against the funding. Check these votes. Edwards voted yes on S. 762, and he didn't vote at all on HR 4613. There was unanimous consent in the Senate on HR 3289, which I believe was the $87 billion supplemental.

The only senator to vote against funding before the middle of 2006 was Arlen Specter. The only real opposition to the funding that I know of came in May 2007 when Kerry and 13 others voted against the funding.

All that said, I'd like to see someone stand up and block the next funding bill from even coming to a vote. The GOP has done it to block the restoration of habeas corpus and other important bills. Let's do it to force a change in policy.

cr, Kerry and Edwards both voted against the $87 billion. I don't know the number of the bill, but the vote was 88-12.
