When There is Nothing Left to Burn, You Have to Set Yourself on Fire

Over winter break, I got really into Pandora and now have 3 awesome channels to listen to depending on my mood.

One song that occasionally plays is called Your Ex-Lover is Dead by the Stars from their album Set Yourself on Fire. The song begins with a man saying, "when there is nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire."

That quote seems to fit with what the Republicans are doing with the stimulus plan. They have nothing left to burn after losing race after race in the 2006 and 2008 elections. Now they are setting themselves on fire by opposing the stimulus bill and even refusing to take any of the money to help the people in their states.

The thing is the economy tanked on the Republicans watch. My advice to Republicans is " you've made your bed, now you got to lie in it."

Whether Republicans are "setting themselves on fire" is sort of missing the issue. The fact is no one can say whether the stimulous bill will work. A good many conservative economists don't think it will. They may be wrong, in which case the Republicans who go along with them will be wrong too. When Mark Sandford, the Republican govenor of South Carolina was recently asked whether the Republican party was running a risk by doing this (and by extension opposing the stimulous bill in general) he candidly said "yes". I don't necessarily fault Republicans for opposing the stimulous bill if they intelligently disagree that it is a solution to the problem.

If the stimulus bill works then 130years of Republican policy and conservative thinking will be proven wrong and will it gut the party. But if ideas matter, there's really no alternative.
