The Fuel That Keeps the War Going

I was talking to my wife last night about the leading Democrats failing to say we will be out of Iraq by 2013. She said it is hard to predict what it will be like in Iraq in the future. I agreed, but believe the violence will slow down when we leave. Once we leave the al Qaeda presence will dry up as they live the country and the Iraqis focus on getting rid of al Qaeda themselves.

Seymour Hersch makes the same conclusion in this quote.

From Andrew Sullivan...

SPIEGEL ONLINE: So what are the options in Iraq?

Seymour Hersh: There are two very clear options: Option A) Get everybody out by midnight tonight. Option B) Get everybody out by midnight tomorrow. The fuel that keeps the war going is us.

Or . . . Iraq descends into all out civil war with Iran arming the Shites and Suadi Arabia arming the Sunis. Kurds declare an independant Kurdish state which sparks uprisinings from Kurds in Turkey and Syria.

Yes, American troops are a focus for violence within Iraq. The alternative, however, is that Iraq becomes a proxy battleground. The native population of Iraq could be easily overwelmed and exploited by more powerful regional forces.

Iraq is a mess we should never have been in. We, however, stired up a hornet's nest, and have some obligation to make our exit as responsible as possible.
