2,000 Foot Rule Doesn't Work

The Des Moines Register has a story about the 2,000 foot rule for sexual predators. The article gives reasons why the law has failed to work...

One of the biggest reasons many law enforcement and prevention advocates believe Iowa's 2,000-foot rule for sex offenders is misguided is because it does little to stop the most likely perpetrators of abuse.

Research has shown that almost 90 percent of all child sexual abuse is committed by people already known to the child - most often a parent, step-parent or boyfriend - according to Steve Scott of Prevent Child Abuse Iowa.
I hope the new Democratic state legislature works on getting rid of the 2,000 foot law and comes up with something that works and is enforceable.

2,000 foot rule is a good example of "security theater"--creates the illusion that government is doing something to protect us, but does nothing to address the real security threats.

More than 90 percent of child sexual abuse is committed by family or friends of the victim. And strangers can drive anywhere to prey on children--it's not as if they are prevented from moving more than 2,000 feet from their front doors.

Still, expect a lot of misleading tv ads in 2008 if the Democratic legislature repeals this stupid law.

so you think that they should just allow sexual predators to live next door to the schools, good call... i think this is a good start because it's making it difficult for them to move anywhere close to children.
