You Probably Think the World has a Creamy Nougat Center of Oil

One of my favorite, James Howard Kunstler, was on the Colbert Report last week.

I first read Kustler in an Urban Georgraphy course in college. Kunstler advocates smart growth and New Urbanism and has written lately about peak oil. Kunstler's sarcasm brings humor to a very serious issue and holds his own with Colbert.

Watch the interview here.

I don't profess to know much about emerging energy technologies, but listening and reading a tiny bit about Kunstler's argument I'm struck that the central problem isn't so much oil as it is energy portability. The reason that solar, wind, biofuels, nuclear, etc., energy can't replace oil is that the energy isn't portable or can't be made portable in quantities sufficient to sustain current consumption levels.

That's all well and good, but doesn't the challenge become, therefore, the development of a portable source of power in sufficient quantities? Kunstler dismisses this as "wishful thinking" but I'd submit it's more properly labled "innovation".
