IA-04: Kurt Meyer Raises $130,000 in 1st Quarter, Sort Of

Kurt Meyer sent a press release out last week saying that his campaign has raised $130,000 in the first 3 months of 2008. At first glance, this seems like a great accomplishment considering he is running in a 4 person race in the Democratic primary.

However, when you do a little digging, you find that $100,000 of that money was a contribution from the candidate himself. That means Meyer has raised $30,000 from other people, which is much less impressive.

Its like a double edged sword.

On one side, I dont want to support someone who is getting by on his own dollar but on the other hand, Spencer dropped out because he felt he couldn't make it competitive without 500-750K, so can we really think that one of these candidates, who has significantly less support and name recognition than Spencer, can win with less than 500K...

Absolutely not. Like it or not it will take money along with grassroots support to beat Latham, and we will need a united front

Spencer's release stated he was primarily dropping out due to lack of support from the DCCC. The DCCC has now targeted this race. This makes me wonder why Spencer really dropped out and since he's behind Kurt Meyer what else is going on.

One millionaire representing majorities without money already.....we don't need another.

Kurt Meyer's press release made it seem like it was a huge out pouring of grassroots support from the district when in actuality he had written himself two $50,000 checks.

Interesting. Has anyone asked if he has a passport? I guess Minnesota is in another country based on what he has learned in 30 years there and brought back with him.

Hope his son who is going to a very pricey prep catholic school up there doesn't develop the same attitudes and spins. What kind of father ships his kid off to a private prep school and then moves to Iowa and gloats about his rich Iowa heritage?

Or even his wife with her high dollar Prada eye glasses. Imagine going and talking to the rural counties with her Prada eye glasses. Wonder how many farm wives will punch her in the head?

This guy is a piece of work, truly is one. I think he'd be worse than Latham.

Anonymous, I wasn't aware that Iowa farm wives were in the habit of punching people in the head if they wear designer glasses.

You don't sound like much of a Democrat, since you are using right-wing talking points to attack Meyer and saying he would be worse than Latham. What game are you playing?

So what if Kurt Meyer's son goes to high school in Minnesota? I am sure those schools are way better than anything St. Ansgar's has to offer. If elected Kurt can just move to Iowa.

I think it is pretty common knowledge that Spencer dropped out not because of funds but because he had some college "incident" that surfaced which would not have sat well with Iowa voters. I would have preferred the Doc and think he had a good shot at run #2. But to say he dropped because of lack of money would be mis-stating things as they really were.

so........you are saying let's use vouchers and send our kids to prep schools?

Spencer dropped out of an incident? Now he and his incident are backing Kurt Meyer? Or is a mere $250 regarding as backing Meyer?

I know why Spencer dropped out. I am just stated what he told the papers. Which is not all together false. I say we need at least half a mil. and even than it will still be tough. No one in the primary really has grass roots support. Except for Meyers, but he is probably a distant 4th in the money total.

We had a great chance this cycle and just couldnt really field a legit candidate. I blame Daryl Beall and Sue Dinsdale :) I hope they reconsider in 2010
