Iowa Politics has a study posted about campaign ads so far this election cycle. The study shows that the most money on campaign ads was spent in Iowa with $43 million. 22,000 ads were played in the Des Moines costing $15 million alone.

This research weakens the case for starting the process in Iowa.
The Register ran a piece not long ago saying the caucuses brought $25 million in business to the Des Moines area, about the same as the Drake Relays.
If it's that expensive to compete here, the prospect for a less-funded candidate to break through is diminished. Why not just have a national primary in that case?
