Looking like a Democratic Primary in Iowa's 4th District

Ever since Selden Spencer decided against running, Democrats were busy looking for a candidate to run against Tom Latham in Iowa's 4th District. Now it is looking like there will be a contested primary. I have heard of 2 candidates that have declared and one candidate that is seriously thinking about a run.

The first candidate is Kurt Meyer and I have heard that he is a solid candidate. Meyer lives in Mitchell County and is a graduate of Luther College. He worked on Mike Blouin's campaign in 1976 and was finance chair of John Culver's Senate campaign in 1980. He then started a political consulting firm based in Minneapolis and has done fundraising.

The other candidate is William Meyers from Humboldt. Meyers is a veteran and wants to bring a fresh voice to Congress. He is more of an unknown among the party officials, but he has a lot of info at his website .

A primary between Meyer and Meyers would be a little confusing at the ballot box since their last names are basically the same.

The other name that I am hearing is Kevin Miskell of Stanhope. Miskell is the Vice President of the Iowa Farmer's Union and was a big Edwards supporter in north central Iowa.

I'm all for primaries.

They sharpen candidates' skills and get the candidates in the news.

May the best Democrat win.

I agree with Desmoiensdem! Sounds like there may be two more jumping in this race as well.

Meyers the unknown was the first to announce, has his name out there, and sends out regular email newsletters, and seems to be organized. He has momentum going.

Haven't had any contact with Meyer. Has a very rough website up and that's about it.

We'll wait and see about Miskell. We know about his fiasco with Story County and the Spencer campaign. That will probably be his end before his beginning.

Sue Dinsdale hasn't ruled out running yet from anything I've heard. Good name recognition there, but unsure of where she is on other issues.

Does anyone know who the other rumored is? I can't seem to remember at this point.

So we have:

1. A wealthy Meyer with connections
2. A marine vet Meyers
3. A farmer with connections (good and bad)
4. An anti-war activist
5. ??????

This must be a first for the 4th D. It's a good sign though. It's progress! Having so many candidates should bring more media attention from the Fallon/Boswell race.

Let the smears begin. This is the rhetoric which is destructive to the party. Something a 25 year old kid who flies to Russia on Daddy's month wouldn't understand. Keep the dirty politics in your own district, Waterloo is full of dirty things.

Waterloo? Doesn't Waterloo lay claim to the largest illegal immigrant population in Iowa? Makes ya wonder who was behind that one.

If Meyer or Meyers or who the hell ever put that kind of photo on their website then I say it's about damn time!

As a state trooper, something needs to be done about immigration. Democrats need to be more aggressive with immigration and they'll get my vote. I'm in the 5th CD and as a Independent, along with the majority of troopers in Iowa, our candidates and incumbents need to change their stance on immigration.

Holy sh$t! Out of curiosity, I checked out these campaign websites. I didn't see anything remotely racist, so someone is full of it. I did however see that Meyers has the perfect statement on immigration reform.

"Establish an English language integration system for those seeking residency, whilst giving law enforcement personnel tools necessary to check status and enforce the strictest of punishment to employers who hire illegal aliens."

If I were in the 4th he'd have my vote!

Hello - this is Sue Dinsdale and I want to go on the record to dispel any rumors: I am not running for any political office. I appreciate that there are some folks who think I should do this, but I have no plans to run.

WE WANT SUE! SHE CAN DO IT! YES SHE CAN!

William Meyers did indeed have a racist photo in the opening montage of his website. It depicted two Latino men, one grabbing his crotch and the other giving the middle finger.

After grassroots activist contacted William Meyers about their disgust he eventually took the photo off his site. It has now been replaced by with one of a security fence.

http://www.meyersforhouse.com/

It is good that William Meyers took this photo down; all candidates should know that racism will not be tolerated in Iowa politics.

Let’s get back to the real issues at hand. Our policies are at the heart of the immigration problem. It is no coincidence that after NAFTA was passed there was a rise in illegal immigration.

We need leaders who will speak eloquently to the issues that impact working families like workers rights, fair trade, single payer health care, getting out of Iraq, education, and global warming.

I encourage everyone to question all candidates on these issues when you get a chance, you may become a part of our state-wide grassroots campaign for economic justice.

Thanks so much!

Thanks Belle! As a long time reader, first time poster I have to say that this is unusual on this website and it makes me want to hurl. In the third, we have an exciting primary and have yet to see childish attacks like this.

Mr. Gates, you posted as a follow up "I posed, what I thought, was a sensible observation from William Meyers' website."

But your original post began as, "I'm not so sure about Mr. Meyers."

A "sensible observation" does not begin with "I'm not so sure about Mr. Meyers." Nor does it go on to attack someone while calling them a racist.

First, your statement begins negatively, leading into an attack.

Secondly, reposting of alleged emails is low class.

Third, the snippet of the email you did repost claims someone wrote you, "For the Democratic agenda to prevail throughout rural Iowa, we must put the issue out there and find a solution which benefits everyone." If you were written this Mr. Gates, then I must say that statement doesn't not sound anything like a racist. A racist doesn't try to "benefit everyone"

I feel you were well deserving of a slam in return. You had one reason for posting on this website and one reason only: To attack.

It is also obvious that you are working in a coalition with Mr. Schwartz. It is blatantly obvious the two of you were scheming together prior to posting here. I'm not sure if it's to promote the agenda of this WFWin.org or on behalf of one of the previously mentioned candidates. The one campaign should immediately file a complaint with the Iowa S.O.S and the F.E.C. as one of you was doing this in conjunction with this .org group

Claiming to be a progressive but you are acting regressive. You may not be "a kid" but you do not act like a man.

Democrats help Democrats, not attack them. As Belle stated, the number one priority is that we take at least one more seat in congress this election cycle.

This is also an attack based on a vets service to our country. Schwartz encourages anti-military actions:

"I told [the high school students] to go on a search and destroy mission and just take every piece of military recruitment material they could find in their town," Schwartz said.

Schwartz proposed several CAN endorsed counter-recruitment tactics, including opt out forms, distracting recruiters, shadowing recruiters, shutting down recruiting tables, and confiscating military propaganda.

One last post - Then I'll be gone. (I promise).
Look - like I said before - it really didn't turn "ugly" in my mind until after the "anonymous" post.
But I wanted to follow up - and close - with one more comment.

While I disagree with some of the tools Mr. Meyers in his campaign, the fact is, he does deserve a lot of respect. He deserves more respect than I've given him.

Mr. Meyers is a veteran. He put his life on the line while serving our country. - and for that I am endless grateful.
Mr. Meyers is a young man looking to better the lives of the people in the 4th district.
We need young people engaged in democracy - and who would better knows the issues of our young vets returning from war than a young veteran?

I'm SICK of the war - I'm sick of the way veterans are treated when they return - I'm sick of the current system.

I want to apologize to Mr. Meyers and to the rest of the readers in this blog. We are all on the same team.
In all honesty, I didn't intend to spark such a topic by posting my first comment. I wanted to put the issue out there. But it got ugly when I read the comment from "anonymous" - and when the puzzle pieces came together. In the grand scheme of things - in a world with war and injustice - this is all just petty BS.

So - from the very bottom of my heart, I'm sorry.

May the best candidate in the 4th district go all the way to Washington.

-Alex

I first want to thank William Meyers for his service to our nation, and for his opposition to the war in Iraq, for that we should all be thankful.

I also want to apologize if I gave the impression that I think William Meyers is a racist, I do not think this.

I had objection to an image he was using on his website that I and others thought demonized Latinos. He took the photo down, and I thank him for doing so, I feel it will help elevate the debate over immigration.

Lets get back to the real issues like the war, fair trade, the economy, and health care.

I am very happy to see that William Meyers mentions the need for Single Payer health care, this is the direction we must head.

Best of luck to William, and all others who enter this race!
