University of Iowa Bans Sidewalk Chalk

There is Facebook group that has been created to legalize chalking at the University of Iowa.
The Universtiy of Iowa has declared a blanket ban on all chalking of university sidewalks. They sent a letter to many student groups (including the Unviersity of Iowa Anti-war committee) threatening fines if the groups continue chalking. This policy is illogical and unreasonable and we demand that the university repeal it.

This policy adversly affects student groups who don't have a lot of resources to advertise. It constricts their freedom of expression on our campus.

Chalk washes away with rain and time. It leaves no damage to university property (the fines are for "clean up costs").

Chalking is environmentally friendly. It is a lot better for mother earth to write with some chalk than to print off a thousand paper leaflets.

Chalk enhances the community of the university, updates students on current events/opinions, and beautifies our campus.

This policy affects all of us. We have lost such a simple right to a draconian university policy. We petition the university and refuse to stop chalking.
Whatever happened to free speech? I'd might be able to understand something like this at a private campus. However, it is is a public sidewalk at a public university.

It is permissible for the government to put "time, place, and manner" restrictions on expression so long as their are reasonable alternative venues and so long as the restriction is applied equally on all groups.

Good gosh, don't we have bigger things to bicker about? Is writing on the sidewalk with a piece of chalk really an issue?

Yeah, what a bunch of BS. Seriously, what does this accomplish, banning sidewalk chalking. Ridiculous! And even though it obviously does not affect everybody directly, we should not get too complacent in letting the people in charge pass dumb, illogical rules. Rules for the sake of rules!
