Colbert Explains Why Bush Must Veto Children's Health Care

Stephen Colbert explains why President Bush must veto the SCHIP bill and prevent uninsured children from getting health care coverage.

If we really care for our kids, we should deny them health insurance now to immunize them against expecting it as adults. If we don’t, when they grow up, who knows what other unrealistic things they’re going to expect? You know, if we fund Head Start now, later, they’ll expect education. If we fund school lunches now, later, they’ll expect food.
You can see the entire video at Crooks and Liars.

Or maybe because providing welfare to people earning up to three times poverty level income is simply a redistribution of wealth and income.

Its one thing to help "poor" children, quite another to put the entire camel's head under the socialist tent.

Why draw the line at "children" aged 24 like the current bill does? Why not children of 37?

Why three times poverty level, why not four or five times poverty level?

Just a couple of reasons that the comedian, who like Jon Stewart provides news coverage to you libs, might have overlooked about the SChip Bill.

Moreover, the way this particular bill operates its a great big gift to big insurance companies as well. Apparantly Jack Hatch's theory that welfare isn't just for poor people anymore has caught on in a big way as we also want a big wealth transper to Wellmark.

........ and yes, Grassley is wrong about this bill.

Sporer-

Your point that they make more money than the poverty is irrelevant when employers are not offering health insurance and when health care costs are skyrocketing. It isn't like these families are using their riches to buy yachts and Escalades.

You and I end up paying more money to cover the uninsured than we would with this program. Both Bush and Steve King have said recently people have access to health care by going to the emergency room. Everyone knows that is the least efficient use of health care resources and is a cause for high costs. You and I end up picking up their tab for the ER visit.

A key to lowering the costs of health care is providing a base coverage to everyone and start focusing on prevention instead of the emergency and catastrophic care that we focus on now. For profit, employment based, private insurance has failed miserably in providing coverage to everyone. And on top of that the employment based system is a huge burden on our economy.
