I was rather surprised to read in the Quad City Times today that Bruce Braley is backing Steny Hoyer for majority leader instead of John Murtha. The article also discusses the Quad City other new Congressman, Phil Hare also.
The Quad-Cities' new freshmen Congressmen get their first vote this Thursday in Democratic caucus elections, and both plan to back Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland over Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, the decorated war veteran, for majority leader. Rep.-elect Phil Hare, of Rock Island, and Rep.-elect Bruce Braley, of Waterloo, each said they would back Rep. Hoyer for the No. 2 spot in the House when Democrats take over in January. They made their comments during breaks in the House's new member orientation meeting, which started in Washington on Monday.I don't know a great deal about Hoyer and Murtha on the issues, but know that Hoyer is more moderate and Murtha is more progressive. Murtha has been an advocate for withdrawing troops from Iraq, a stance that Braley campaigned on.

You've got it backwards. Murtha is more moderate, Hoyer is more liberal. Read the WaPo or NYTimes articles from today. Hoyer's no progressive but he's no moderate...does that make him a New Democrat or DLC'er? Maybe. That's on the party issues. Where Rep. John Lewis goes, and Rep-elect. Braley, I go.
Matt Stoller at myDD makes a fairly strong argument in favor of Murtha. In a different post on the same site, another commentator notes that while most of the newly elected Dem representatives appear to favor Hoyer, Pelosi's recent letter endorsing Murtha appears to have carried the day.
Try "googling" Murtha and see what comes up. Military pork will get the same results as"googling" Murtha. The occupation of Iraq is the only left tilt to MURTHA.
I don't know that having a Majority Leader that calls legislation the Speaker supports 'Crap' is good for the Party.
