Fallon to be endorsed by the Sierra Club

State Representative and Gubernatorial Candidate Ed Fallon (D-Des Moines) will hold a press conference Thursday at noon to announce he has been endorsed by the Iowa Sierra Club, the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental group.

“I’ve served on the Environmental Protection Committee in the State Legislature for 14 years, and I’ve worked together with the Sierra Club on a lot of key issues,” Fallon said. “I share the Sierra Club’s concerns for protecting Iowa’s unique natural environments, our soil and our water.”

The Sierra Club has worked for over 100 years on issues involving the protection of public resources.

“We simply need to be willing to stand up to polluters and do the hard work necessary to enact change,” Fallon said. “My campaign is all about hard work, and I’ve been working hard on environmental issues for two decades.”

Doesn't this go against Fallon's 'no big name endorsements' and 'no special interests' theme of his campaign? I'm happy he got the endorsement and please the Sierra Club is involved (and hopefully will stay involved in the general electioin cycle). But you have to admit, this (VERY BIG NAME) endorsement is the exact opposite of what Ed has been preaching from the beginning

It is a big endorsement, but he is not getting money from the Sierra Club.

Thanks for the clarification.

don't sierra club people work for fallon? i think there is a quid pro quo going on as well. shady and i'm not talking sequoias.

I don't think it's 'shady' I just didn't understand it. The more people I ask about it say it's a good thing for Fallon. (I guess the Sierra Club doesn't usually get involved in primaries, but really trusts Fallon). Why would it be wrong for Sierra Club memebers to already be working for Fallon? They obvisouly supported him before the endorsement.

What do you mean by "working"? I highly doubt that any of Fallon's official staff members are on the payroll of the Sierra Club. Some of the staff members might be members of the Sierra Club, but I don't see anything wrong with that. I am a member of the Sierra Club and am volunteering for the Fallon Campaign organizing people here in town. Which again, I don't see anything wrong with that.

The Sierra Club is interested in protecting the environment.

So is Ed.

If that classifies as "quid pro quo," then I guess we've got a problem.

We've got some people on staff who are interested in preserving the environment too, as it turns out. That's part of why they work for Ed.

so it's possible that donations and endorsements are passed around for other reasons that the dark and shady reasons that ed implies? "i will support you because i agree with your philosophy" versus "i will support you if you get me something in return." that's what ed's been preaching/implying, that anyone who has received money or endorsements up to this point are selling out to corporate interests. those are offensive and pretty dark accusations. righteous rhetoric of the not-for-sale bunch which smacks of a self-serving moral convenience. it's as easy to sell out to the left as it is the right.

i'm a member of the sierra club and the WWF and i'm not supporting ed fallon.

There is a huge difference between a $20 check and a $10,000. That is the unfair influence that Fallon has been talking about.
